License Requirements, Fees, and Examination Information:
Examination Requirements: 6-hour National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) Principles and Practices of Surveying (PS), a four-hour California-specific examination on land surveying, and Take-Home California State Laws and Board Rules Exam.

Background Check: Completing a background check is required for licensure. All applicants are required to submit fingerprints prior to sitting for examination. For more information, please refer to the Board’s website at: http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/applicants/fingerprinting.shtml.
Examination Frequency: Semi-Annual (spring and fall) examination cycle. For final filing dates, please refer to the Board’s website at: www.pels.ca.gov.

Experience Requirement: With a Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certificate, six (6) years of equivalent full-time experience in land surveying, including other credits, with one year each of responsible field training and responsible office training. Please refer to the Board’s website at: www.bpelsg.ca.gov.
Waiver of the Fundamentals of Surveying exam is available if applicant is a Professional Engineer in California, or has a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or is a graduate of an approved four-year land surveying curriculum and submits satisfactory evidence of 15 years or more of qualifying experience, or is a graduate of a land surveying curriculum, with a B.S. degree or equivalent, and submits satisfactory evidence of 17 years or more of qualifying experience, or holds a valid LSIT certificate from another state.
Average Time to Process Application: Three (3) months.
