License Requirements, Fees, and Examination Information:
Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.)

Examination Requirement: 8-hour National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) Fundamental Engineering (FE) examination.

Background Check: Completing a background check is required for licensure. All applicants are required to submit fingerprints prior to sitting for examination. Certification: Engineering in Training (EIT)

Examination Frequency: Year-round examination cycle. For details, please refer to the NCEES website at: www.ncees.org.

Exam Locations: Statewide at designated locations. Please refer to the NCEES website at: www.ncees.org.

Experience Requirement: Three (3) or more years postsecondary (college level) engineering education, or three (3) or more years engineering-related work experience, or a combination of the two that total three (3) or more years.

Average Time to Process Application: Three (3) months.

Comments: All applicants are required to register for the examination and pay their examination fee directly to NCEES. This process applies to ALL applicants, including those who are refiling or retaking an examination.

Step 1: Register with NCEES during open registration period.

Step 2: Pay NCEES for national exam-related expenses during registration process.

Step 3: Those candidates who pass the FE examination are required to submit the certification application form and application fee to the California Board to obtain certification as an EIT.
