License Requirements, Fees, and Examination Information:
Persons providing independent instruction in the operation of motor vehicles for compensation.
Fees: Application: $30; Renewal: $30; Additional: $30; Transfer or duplicate: $15; Family support: $1.
Examination Frequency: Three years following date of issuance.
Exam Locations: Multiple
Experience Requirement: High school graduate or equivalent.
Average Time to Process Application: 120 days. May issue temporary permit (see miscellaneous section at the end).
Renewal Period: Every 3 years.
Special License Requirements: Background investigation; physical examination; 21 years of age or older; must be employed as an accredited teacher of driver education or training under provisions of Education Code at all times; have satisfactorily completed a course in the teaching of driver education and driver training acceptable to the department; pass the required written exam; submit a vehicle inspection report annually; meet all requirements of Vehicle Code Section 11103—maintain insurance coverage at all times; submit proof of coverage with application. License issued only if city population is less than 50,000 and county population is less than 400,000, and there is no licensed driving school in the city.
