License Requirements, Fees, and Examination Information:
Managers or administrators of driving schools.
Fees: Application: $100; Transfer of license: $15; Renewal: $100; Replacement or duplication: $15; Family support: $1.
Examination Frequency: Initial application and every 3 years (18 hours of continuous professional education can be substitute for the subsequent exams).
Exam Locations: Multiple
Experience Requirement: Must have worked for an established licensed California driving school as a driving instructor.
Average Time to Process Application: 120 days. May issue temporary permit.
Renewal Period: Annually.
Special License Requirements: Age 21 years of age or older; pass background investigation; be the driving school owner or an employee of the school designated by the owner to operate the school; have worked for an established licensed California driving school as a driving instructor for a period of not less than 2,000 hours of actual behind-the- wheel teaching and have satisfactorily completed a course in the teaching of driver education and driver training acceptable to the department, OR be certified by the Department of Education as fully qualified to teach driver education and driver training, and has taught such subjects in the public school system for a period not less than 1,000 hours; pass required written exam.
