El Dorado County Profile

About this area:
El Dorado is located in the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, east of Sacramento. Surrounding counties include Placer to the north, Amador and Alpine to the south, and Sacramento to the west; El Dorado’s eastern boundary is shared with the state of Nevada. Considered one of the most diversified recreational areas in California, the El Dorado National Forest is one of the most heavily used wilderness areas in the nation. The Sierra Nevada Mountains, the north fork of the American River and Lake Tahoe are just some of the natural attractions. Not surprisingly, the county economy is heavily dependent on recreation and tourism.
