Fees: Application and examination fee: $50; Re-examination fee: $15; Initial License $175; Renewal fee: $125 Fingerprint Processing fee: Department of Justice: $32 Federal Bureau of Investigation: $17
Examination Frequency: Exams are given by a contracted company known as PSI. If the individual meets the minimum requirements for admittance to the examination after the application has been reviewed and approved, he/she will receive a letter to contact PSI for scheduling. Exams are given 5 days a week.
Exam Locations: PSI has 13 different locations within California.
Experience Requirement: Be 18 years of age or older, possess a minimum of 6,000 hours of compensated experience in investigative work (equates to 3 years of full-time employment), take and pass the examination.
Average Time to Process Application: 120 days.
Renewal Period: Biennially (every second year).
Special License Requirements: Undergo a criminal history background check by the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
