License Requirements, Fees, and Examination Information:
Land Surveyor

Examination Requirements: 6-hour National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) Principles and Practices of Surveying (PS), a four-hour California-specific examination on land surveying, and Take-Home California State Laws and Board Rules Exam.

Background Check: Completing a background check is required for licensure. All applicants are required to submit fingerprints prior to sitting for examination. For more information, please refer to the Board’s website at: http://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/applicants/fingerprinting.shtml.

Examination Frequency: Semi-Annual (spring and fall) examination cycle. For final filing dates, please refer to the Board’s website at: www.pels.ca.gov.

Experience Requirement: With a Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certificate, six (6) years of equivalent full-time experience in land surveying, including other credits, with one year each of responsible field training and responsible office training. Waiver of the Fundamentals of Surveying exam is available if applicant is a Professional Engineer in California, or has a valid certificate as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or is a graduate of an approved four-year land surveying curriculum and submits satisfactory evidence of 15 years or more of qualifying experience, or is a graduate of a land surveying curriculum, with a B.S. degree or equivalent, and submits satisfactory evidence of 17 years or more of qualifying experience, or holds a valid LSIT certificate from another state.

Average Time to Process Application: Three (3) months.
