Marin County Marin County is bordered on the north and northeast by Sonoma County and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Linked to San Francisco by the Golden Gate Bridge and to the east bay by the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, it is one of nine counties which significantly contribute to the economy of the San Francisco Bay Area as an urban center. The other eight counties are: Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Additionally, the county’s rural coastal corridor and inland valleys feature vast acreage in farm production and open space for tourism and recreation.
San Francisco County The combined city, county and port of San Francisco is located on a hilly peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. Bordered by San Mateo to the south, the county is the smallest in California, occupying just forty-seven square miles of land. The most prominent of San Francisco’s hills are Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson and Mount Sutro, both more than 900 feet in height. The best known are Nob Hill and Telegraph Hill. Also inside the county’s borders are the natural islands of Alcatraz and Yerba Buena and man-made Treasure Island.
San Mateo County San Mateo County is in the middle of a continuous urban area stretching from San Jose (Santa Clara County) in the south to San Francisco County in the north. San Mateo is one of nine counties which significantly contribute to the economy of the San Francisco Bay Area as an urban center. The other eight counties are Napa, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Solano, Alameda, Sonoma and Marin. The coastal Santa Cruz Mountain range bisects San Mateo, leaving the western side to more rural uses such as agriculture, game preserve, watershed, parks and undeveloped lands. In contrast, the densely populated eastern half of the county contains most major transportation arteries and facilities, including Interstate 280, Highway 101, the Dumbarton and San Mateo Bridges, San Francisco International Airport and the deepwater port of Redwood City.
