What is a regional economy?

California has one of the largest and most diverse economies in the world. Regional analyses offer new insight into the dynamics of California's economy. Through a regional perspective, we are able to better understand how the economy is changing, where the changes are concentrated, and what catalysts and conditions are causing those changes. We can also see how change in one region affects other regions and the state as a whole.

To create an effective statewide strategy for continued economic growth, it is necessary to understand the different economic regions of the State, so that policies and strategic initiatives can then be developed that focus on each region's strengths and weaknesses. The California Economic Strategy Panel staff worked with the Employment Development Department to identify factors that determine regional characteristics. This information was used to identify nine economic regions.
